A Coastal Christmas

A Coastal Christmas

Can you believe the festive season is upon us and we are already writing Christmas posts? While all my US and UK friends will be celebrating, with snowflakes falling outside, and drinking eggnog, think of me over here in a hot Aussie summer on the coast. My Australian readers will know exactly what I am thinking about when I imagine the heat of Christmas day, the cicadas chirping in the hot still air, and the welcome sound of the summer surf breaking on the beach

How do we spend the day? We’ll get up very early and do the Santa Claus presents with the grandchildren, then we’ll go for a lovely walk on the beach (if it’s not too hot!) followed by a swim. We’ll come home to a cold lunch of fresh prawns, (shrimps for the US readers) oysters, and good old Aussie Pavlova and fruit! We’ll lie around for the afternoon, relaxing and reading our new Christmas books, probably with chilled champagne close by.
Being a part of this Coastal Romance group of readers and writers has suited me well this last few months. I love including the ocean, rivers, creeks, babbling brooks, tropical islands, waterfalls and lakes in my stories. You would have a problem if you were to find a piece of my writing that did not have a water scene. There is even a bathtub scene in Blind Lust below! My first short story published many years ago was published in an anthology called Estuary.
So for a little Christmas treat I am going to take you to some lovely places...one from each of my books For more information, click on the book title:

Holiday Affair...the Whitsunday Islands
She dozed, drifting in and out of a light sleep, lulled by the sound of the surf and the happy shrieks of children splashing in the waves. The gulls swooped and squawked above the dunes, and the sun warmed her bare skin. Contentment stole over her like a soft blanket as her mind cleared for the first time in days.

Italian Affair...Lipari Island, Italy.
A mass of wildflowers covered the cliff down to the rocky beach below, and she paused to pick one every so often until she had a small posy in her hands. At the halfway point, she rounded a headland and Mount Stromboli appeared before her, rising majestically out of the ocean, plumes of smoke puffing from the live volcano.

Outback Affair...Northern Outback Australia
From sixty feet above, water fell in a white froth over a series of stepped rocks down to the clear, deep pool edged by pure white sand. A tall tree with lacy foliage overhung the water at the far end, its lazy movement reflected in the still green depths. The gorge walls rose high, and she had to crane her head back to see the bright blue sky.

Dangerous Desire...the Whitsunday Islands
It might not have been far to the house but Gracie picked her way carefully through the stubby mangrove roots and oyster-encrusted rocks exposed by the low tide. Crabs skittered away from her feet and small fish darted through the crystal-clear shallows.

Winter of the Passion Flower...Amazon Jungle
A magnificent vista of green jungle edged with the distant deep blue of the Pacific Ocean spread beyond the Amazon River. Steep rocky cliffs tumbled away beneath them and a fine mist rose from the surging water of the roaring waterfall cooling their overheated bodies. Indigo pointed eastward, where a high snow-capped mountain disappeared in the clouds.

Summer of the Moon Flower... Isle of Rothmore, Scotland
Sofia stepped from the cave and searched the shore line for the clearest route to the water. She raised her hand and shaded her eyes from the morning sun glinting off the narrow channel of water between the small island and the mainland. The beach circled around the bay in a deep horseshoe shape and piles of fallen rocks covered the sand. The shingle at the south end of the beach was clearer and Sofia tied her skirt up into a loose knot and set to work.

Blind Lust...A bathroom in a cottage in Silver Valley, Connecticut
Dozens of candles flickered in the soft light and he caught the faint sound of violins in the air. Lizzy led him wordlessly upstairs into her bathroom and stood beside a huge bath. It was filled with steaming water, crushed lavender, and rose petals.

Holding the white flowers to her chest, she inhaled their sweet fragrance and stood on the cliff top as thoughts flitted in and out of her mind. The bright pink of the pigface plant at the top of the cliff was a riot of color and further brightened her mood. Change was coming—as surely as the fog would roll in from the sea this afternoon.

  10. Living here in the desert of Arizona, we don't do the beach thing. However, I have a sister that lives in San diego so I always go with her to the beach in La Jolla. I just stick my toes in the water and I am done. Not really a beach person. I do love to fish from creeks and steams tho.

  22. Thanks for the mini tour of all those places. I'd love to visit any one of them one day. My favorite place next to water is in Amritsar, Punjab, India. There is a pool of water surrounding The Golden Temple, one of the holiest places in the Sikh religion. There is such a feeling of peace there that pervades your soul. The beauty of it is that it's open to everyone to take in and enjoy.

  36. I've only been to the beach once Coronado Island in California. I was on a business trip and had some free time so I took a ride out to the island. I've always been drawn to water and loved the (recorded) sounds of the waves. It was off season, a bit chilly, but the beach of deserted. I went out close to the water and sat down on the sand... I can only express it as a sense of coming home... I was there for a very long time, totally at peace... A cherished memory...

  39. From the places I've traveled, I love the beaches in Australia the most. They have tonal blues and nice white sand. I've not had a chance to swim or go into the waters as I'm always traveling to Australia when it's cold. I'll love to try that some day but not sure if I'll be able to take the summer temperatures. Thanks for the awesome giveaways!

  45. Annie, I love the beach and wished I lived closer to one. I've been to the beach at Corpus Christi, Texas a few times and that's my favorite at this point, but I would love to visit more beaches. I would love if Christmas in Texas meant summer weather! I am not a fan of cold 30 degree weather!
